Account for the rider and the motorcycle first

A motorcycle crash can leave a rider separated from the bike and equipment spread across the roadway. Emergency care and scene control come first; document only when doing so does not place anyone in traffic or delay treatment.

  • Request appropriate emergency help for injury or immediate danger
  • Record where the rider and motorcycle came to rest if safely observable
  • Identify who moved the bike or gear and why, if known
  • Save the tow operator and storage destination
  • Write down the responding agency before leaving the scene

Preserve the bike, gear and roadway context

Avoid cleaning, repairing or discarding damaged riding equipment before it has been photographed. Keep original camera or ride files intact and make a separate working copy if you need to share them.

  • Motorcycle controls, wheels, bodywork and each damaged side
  • Helmet shell and liner, jacket, gloves, boots and other gear
  • Lane markings, pavement defects, debris, fluids and sight lines
  • Mounted-camera, phone or ride-device files in original format
  • Keys, removed parts and repair-shop inspection notes

Tie the report search to the exact riding route

Record the road name, nearest cross street or freeway direction and where in the lane the crash occurred. Use the incident card or agency identity to choose the SJPD or CHP report path rather than assuming the motorcycle crash belongs to one agency.

  • Street or route, direction of travel and nearest landmark
  • Agency name and incident or report reference
  • Tow receipt linked to the same date and motorcycle
  • Separate DMV filing confirmation if a filing is made

Inventory riding-property losses

A motorcycle property file can include the bike, safety gear, mounted accessories and carried items. Photograph and list each item before replacing or disposing of it, and keep treatment records in a separate medical folder.

  • Bike estimate, inspection and storage communications
  • Gear and accessory inventory with purchase records if available
  • Transportation costs while the motorcycle is unavailable
  • Insurer calls logged with date, representative and request
  • Treatment, bill and work-loss records organized by date
