At the scene, if it is safe

Call for emergency help when anyone may be seriously hurt or in danger. Otherwise, focus on a concise record rather than an argument about fault.

  • Move away from active traffic when safe and lawful
  • Exchange driver, vehicle and insurance information
  • Photograph positions, damage, road controls and conditions
  • Ask witnesses for contact details without pressuring them
  • Record the agency and incident information provided

After leaving the scene

Back up evidence, write down the sequence while it is fresh, follow medical instructions, notify the appropriate insurer and check whether an official report is required.

  • Create folders for evidence, reports, medical, vehicle, insurance and work
  • Keep claim numbers and adjuster contact details
  • Save receipts and estimates
  • Check DMV accident-reporting criteria at the official source
  • Use the report finder for SJPD or CHP instructions
