Coverage inquiry checklist

Keep the conversation factual and tied to the written policy, claim correspondence and documents you can verify.

  • Locate declarations, endorsements and policy language
  • Save the other driver's insurance information or coverage response
  • Keep the agency report or incident information
  • Notify your insurer using its stated process
  • Ask which coverage is being evaluated and why
  • Request any coverage decision and cited policy terms in writing

Coverage file

Save originals and maintain a short communication log so requests, promises and open questions do not disappear across calls.

  • Your policy and declarations
  • Other party and vehicle details
  • Other insurer's written response
  • Police or collision report information
  • Your insurer's requests and decisions
  • Medical, damage and expense records

Questions worth asking

Ask what evidence is needed, whether hit-and-run or unknown-driver provisions differ, what policy duties apply and how disputed coverage questions can be reviewed.
